There are many different types of leadership. One may work for some people while others thrive in a different leadership style. Learning how to be flexible in the style of leadership is essential when working with different people. Transactional leadership is more of a rewards and punishment type of leadership to motivate employees to meet goals. To monitor the team in order to make sure everyone is staying on track. To be rewarded when directions are followed and to be reprimanded in some way to show that actions have consequences and directions are to be followed. Transformation is motivating and connecting with employees to ensure that individuals have autonomy over their day to day while still meeting the organizations goals and expectations.
Although some may think that it is what every leader is, that is not the case. I had several leaders that would lead you to believe they were there to help you and guide you but in the end that was just not who they were. It took me quite a few different leaders before I came in contact with a transformational leader. One that would take time to sit with their team to learn what motivated them to see what their goals were and to help individuals achieve said goals. "Transformational leadership is the process whereby a person engages with others and creates a connection that raises the level of motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower" (Northouse, 2022, p.186). The leader I am thinking of would meet with people regularly to set up small goals to accomplish in order to move forward in the direction of the bigger goal. She would have small check ins in between where she would just see how you were doing? If tasks were proving to be difficult to accomplish she would sit down and re-strategize a plan to better suite people's needs. If concerns were brought to her attention she would address the situations quickly before they became bigger problems within the team. She would do little things for the team that would show that she cared and in doing so would boost morale. People would gravitate to her to ask advice or guidance.
I do believe that if a certain leadership style is not working that transformational style could be successful. People require different leadership styles that not everyone agrees with. Sometimes we have to think outside of the box in order to meet a person's expectations. While most of the leadership styles such as the path-goal and the leaders-member exchange all focus around leader and member interactions and cohesiveness. Transformational leadership takes it to a different level. This is where the leader will take additional time to understand employees to see what is working for them and what should be changed, how can we create structure while still giving the autonomy many are actively looking for. Northouse states that "when leaders and followers have good exchanges, they feel better and accomplish more, and the organization prospers" (Northouse, 2022, p161). Transformational leadership is being inspirational and empowering.
