CLASSMATE 3: The death penalty sparks controversy amongst the public. Many people agree with the death penalty while others oppose it. There has been a sharp decrease in executions, and I think that is because it is raising concerns. Around the world, fifty-three countries still have the death penalty, which is less than the majority. A growing number of countries have abolished it, and death sentences and executions have become less common. Even in the United States, the death penalty is not being imposed like it used to. I find it interesting that the death penalty has been around since colonial times, and it has changed drastically. From the methods they used to the public opinions about it, who knows what else will change. By looking at exhibit 3-4 in the text, many countries view the death penalty differently.

More than 70% of the world's countries have abolished capital punishment in law or practice (Death Penalty Information Center, n.d.). Today, most countries view the death penalty as a violation to human rights. We can see the decline in capital punishment as more people are not supporting it and it has brought about constitutional concerns. Since the exhibit was from 2017, I am wondering if the numbers are still close to what we can see on the graph. By looking at China, I can establish that they use capital punishment more then other countries. It has been confirmed that China has the most executions, with execution numbers being in the thousands. With this, I can tell that China has different views and opinions about the death penalty compared to other countries.

CLASSMATE 4: I reviewed exhibit 3-4 in chapter 3 of the textbook, which presents the number of executions from 1976 through 2017 in the United States and around the world and observed the following.

China has the most recorded executions in 2017, totaling reported executions in the 1000's. There are four countries that are responsible for 84% of all recorded executions, which are Iran 507+, Saudi Arabia 146, Iraq 125+, and Pakistan 60+.

Afghanistan carried out multiple executions out in one day. USA's recorded executions and death sentences increased but remained within historically low trends. Vietnam's figures on the use of death penalty remain is state secret. Somalia's had a significant decrease in death sentences. Japan's executions carried out in secret. North Korea's executions continued after unfair trials even for a wide range of offenses or acts for which the death penalty should not be imposed. Malaysia conducted death executions including for drug-related offenses.

Countries such as Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia, Russia, and Kazakhstan do not have any reported death penalty executions. However, "142 countries worldwide have abolished the death penalty execution in law or practice. Mongolia, Guatemala, and Guinea are the most recent to abolish the death penalty execution in 2017. There are approximately twenty countries in Sub-Saharan Africa that abolished the death penalty." (amnesty.org)
