As a newly appointed chief executive officer who was advised of those unsafe working conditions, would you implement any changes in the existing policies regarding these working conditions of your employees? Unsafe Working Conditions When Walmart agreed to pay a $190,000 fine for numerous health and safety violations at its Rochester, New York store, it was evident that there was a problem. However, when as the largest private employer in the world, it was reported that it had been cited in more than 100 OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administrations) violation, it was obvious more than an anomaly, but rather a pattern of consistent disregard for the safety and health of its employees. As a result of these infractions, Walmart faced many work stoppages and governmental scrutiny over the labor conditions of its sub-contracted workers within its supply chain, domestically as well as globally. In its Rochester site alone, OSHA cited Walmart for hazards including a lack of training on hazardous materials, blocked exits and its unsafe trash compactor procedures. The assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health, Dr. David Michaels, believes this settlement will give a clear message to other companies, as well as protect the Othousands of exposed workers safe and healthy on the job. However, a group of several thousand Walmart workers who call themselves OUR Walmart and are affiliated with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), a retail and grocery union, are pleased there was a settlement since it meant Walmart would have to acknowledge the concerns that these workers had raised for years. Still, these workers believe Walmart has a long way to go. For example, some of the hazards that these workers face range from inadequate fire safety measures to poorly maintained equipment Unfortunately, the safety concerns of Walmarts workers continues. Just one month prior to the announced $190,000 fine, California warehouse workers announced a two day, strike in protest for Walmart alleged retaliation for exposing the safety risks which they have had to endure. The workers had filed an official complaint with labor authorities for conditions which included inadequate safety protection, not enough access to drinking water in the warehouses where temperatures inside can reach 125 degrees Fahrenheit and a management culture who bullies them. Since Walmart is not unionized, these workers did not have the right to picket or strike with the help of the UCFW union. Yet, since the UFCW had formally pledged not to try to unionize Walmarts workers, it could not be accused of illegally picketing during strikes protesting working conditions. At the end of the day, the dispute between Walmart and its workers over safety and health conditions, still does not appear to be resolved
