There are many ways in which alcohol use disorder can show dependence on those suffering from it. One noticeable way is through salience. A high level of salience means that alcohol usage takes a higher priority than most other activities or responsibilities. For instance, when given the opportunity to hang out with friends or coworkers without alcohol present, users may decline these offers in favor of drinking alone. Another situation is when one decides to drink excessive alcohol the night before or the morning before work no matter the consequences. This behavior can lead to someone losing their group of friends and any job prospects they have.

Alongside salience, tolerance can also be a problem. The main effect that alcohol is meant to achieve is a state of drunkenness. However, repeated excess use of alcohol can actually lead to a stronger ability to withstand its effects and prevent one from becoming drunk in the same amount it usually takes. In order to compensate for this, users will consume more alcohol than before, whether it be more of the same drink or drinks with higher alcohol content. Either way, this will lead to more money being spent on drinking. If this behavior continues, it is possible for someone to spend most, if not all the money they have, on alcohol. With no money, they will be unable to afford educational courses or housing and will be dependent on government programs or be forced into homelessness.

The two elements I chose are Salience and Tolerance. Salience is when someone prioritizes drug or alcohol use to other activities regardless of the harsh and negative consequences. An increase in salience is when the user will ignore what is considered to be the appropriate time or place to drink alcohol or abuse a substance. An indication of Salience is the amount of time spent abusing a substance, also spending more times at bars and parties or anywhere that involves drinking. This can be an issue when the user is abusing a substance before any activities or at work, they can arrive late, affect their ability to perform. This can affect everyone, the user, families and friends, and possibly lose their job.

Tolerance is a condition that happens when the body is used to a substance so that the user will need more or want something stronger to feel the effects. When someone is drinking alcohol or abusing a substance all the time this increase the tolerance, this can be harmful because cause physical damage without their acknowledge. When someone has a higher tolerance, they will not feel the same effects, someone that has a higher tolerance with alcohol will feel less drunk and will continue drinking, and may suffer from alcohol poisoning. Tolerance can be developed at a psychological and behavioral level.
