In the midst of a chaotic and dangerous situation at a concert, it is crucial to follow a structured problem-solving approach to ensure safety. The first step is to find the problem. In this case, the immediate problem is the risk of being trampled in a panicked crowd and the danger posed by the fire. Fact-finding follows where I would gather information about my surroundings. Some of the facts available are that the fire is on the stage, the main exit is overcrowded, and I am surrounded by a panicked crowd. I would define the problem as solving how I can safely navigate through the panicked crowd while avoiding being trampled or suffocating. I would then proceed to find ideas for possible solutions. These possible solutions include staying calm to avoid panic, moving in the direction of the crowd, not against it, protecting my chest and breathing space, and avoiding solid objects that might cause the crowd pressure to surge (Blum, 2022).

The next step would involve evaluating the solutions based on their feasibility and safety. Staying calm is possible and essential in helping me think clearly. Moving with the crowd is very important as it prevents me from being knowledgeable. Protecting my chest and breathing space also keeps me from suffocating. It is also possible to avoid solid objects which could crush me. I would select a compilation of these solutions that would ensure optimal safety. My action play would involve first folding my arms towards my chest to protect my breathing space, keeping my feet firmly on the ground to maintain balance, and moving with the crowd so that I do not get knocked over (Sreenivas, 2022). I would also propose to avoid walls or barricades where the crowd pressure is high. To gain acceptance of the solutions, I would try sharing my plan with those nearby to see if we can coordinate action. I would then execute the ideas based on the action plan to maximize my safety throughout this process.

The problem in the scenario is the fire and being trampled by the crowd.

Step 2: Fact Finding

Quickly gather key facts by observing flames, smoke, the collapsed stage, the direction the crown is moving, obstacles, and possible exit routes.

Step 3: Problem Definition

The root cause of the problem was the lighting platform crashing during the concert, which started a fire and caused the stage to collapse. The incident caused panic and people started rushing toward the main exit, trampling people in their path. The threats are the fire, smoke, and potentially being trampled and crushed by the crowd.

Step 4: Idea Finding

Solutions would include finding alternative exits, staying low to avoid smoke inhalation, using my clothing to cover my nose and mouth, and looking for any guidance from the arena staff or security.

Step 5: Evaluation and Selection

Assess and choose the best solution based on immediate safety moving towards an alternate exit.

Step 6: Action Planning

Plan immediate actions, including moving away from the crowd, toward the nearest less crowded exit, avoiding barriers, remaining calm, and helping others near me if possible.

Step 7: Gaining Acceptance

Encourage those around me to follow my plan using clear and calm communication and body language.

Step 8: Action Taking

Execute the plan by moving carefully and quickly toward the chosen exit and assisting others if possible.

Step 1: The problem I am currently facing is escaping from the arena without being trapped by the fleeing crowd and succumbing to the spreading fire. There is risk to my life from the trampling crowd as well as the fire. There are sparks flying into the crowd which could cause burns and the collapsed stage could lead to other parts of the arena collapsing which could also cause injury.

Step 2: The information I have collected about my current problem that I am facing is that I am at risk of serious injury or death. Crowd trampling events are very dangerous and can cause death and injury, the most common cause of death in such situations being suffocation (How and why do crowd surges turn deadly? 2022). Fire can cause serious life long injuries and death.

Step 3: My main current problem is being trapped by a crowd fleeing a fire.

Step 4: Some solutions to solve my current problem could be to go with the flow of the crowd towards the exit, to signal for help from emergency responders, to try to head for the edges of the arena to avoid the crowd, or to try to climb somewhere higher than the crowd such as a light fixture, chair, or a support beam. Once I am out of the way of the crowd, I can solve the problem of the fire.

Step 5: My evaluation criteria for my solutions is that they need to be plausible and possible to carry out. They also need to be able to be done quickly and easily as the danger to my person is imminent.

Step 6: To plan out my action I need to quickly observe my surroundings. I need to see if there is any way to get out of the crowd by looking around to observe if there is anywhere high to climb. I also need to observe if there are any emergency workers to signal to. It's also important for me to observe how close the fire is to me as that will also inform which solution to my problem I choose. Other factors at play are the size of the people around me. I am an average height female so if the crowd around me is mostly female, I will be at less risk of getting crushed by the crowd. If the crowd around me is mostly male then that will inform my decision making and problem solving as the danger is more imminent.

Step 7: I can try to communicate with those closest to me in the crowd to remain calm or to climb something to escape the crowd crush. If I had something like a microphone I would be able to project my voice to the crowd to urge for a calm exit to avoid injuries.

Step 8: To escape injury or death in a crowd crush situation arising from a fire causing a rush to the exit, my solution would be to climb whatever is nearest to me to escape the crowd. I have determined that the imminent threat to me is the crowd crush, therefore I would focus on remaining safe from the crowd as my first priority. After I escape the crowd by climbing a high structure, I would observe around me to make sure the fire is not close to me. From my vantage point I would be able to see if I was safe from the fire and when it would be safe to come down to avoid the crowd.
