There is competition between firms in a perfectly competitive market. The only situation in which there is no competition present within a market is during the reign of a monopoly. If there are multiple firms in a market, then there will be competition between these firms in order to maximize business. Although it may seem as though there is no competition in a perfectly competitive market, there is, in fact, competition between firms. Firms must compete with each other in order to maximize business or else they will cease to exist.

It is important to note, however, that these perfectly competitive markets seldom exist. Therefore, the debate over the competitive nature of these types of markets are unnecessary. In a market or mixed economy, there will always be competition between various firms in the market.
