Law enforcement officers often play an important role as first responders in domestic violence cases. Law enforcement officers are supposed to be trained to help de-escalate situations and have the proper approach to help both the victim and the perpetrator. I believe there are both strengths and weaknesses in police officers when it comes to domestic violence cases. For instance, officers have the authority to remove abusers from the home, enforce restraining orders, and make arrests. However, some officers may not take the situation seriously enough or may blame the victim. Extensive training for police officers is very important so they can help identify the seriousness of these cases. Lack of extensive training can result in a limited understanding of how to appropriately handle and de-escalate situations. A suggestion I offer to provide change for domestic violence cases and first responders is that there could be a certain number of teams specialized in taking care of DV cases. If they are solely dedicated to helping in these cases, they can follow up with the people involved and ensure they get the case worked on as soon as possible.
