Please respond to this discussion question below thoroughly and detailed

Because of various reasons, one of the critical challenges for law enforcement agencies, especially local agencies, is recruiting new candidates. One of the suggested solutions is to reduce the minimum requirements, such as height, weight, and education level, to attract more applicants. What do you think about this issue? Do you think law enforcement agencies should or should not sacrifice their requirement to attract more candidates? Why?

I don't think we should lower the standards for future candidates. We shouldn't have to hire those that don't meet the qualifications. I understand we are having an issue recruiting law enforcement officers however, the standards ought to be not lower. Are we considering putting unfit law enforcement officers in charge of our communities and enforcing the law? It seems like we would be sacrificing quality over quantity. Education is very crucial as those with higher education tend to make better decisions and have the knowledge to not violate citizens' rights. According to the textbook titled An Introduction to Policing it states, "Over the years, we have come to realize that brains are more important than brawn in police work" (Dempsey et al., 2019, p. 107). With regards to height and weight, I was unaware it made a difference, but after watching the video I can see why. Another thing to mention, this raises questions on the risk of corruption within the police departments as well as public safety. Decreasing the standards required for an applicant might attract people with questionable behavior. I truly believe the negatives outweigh the positives. Take for instance, when police officers are at a criminal scene those who don't have experience and the proper knowledge in this situation may dispose of evidence or even improperly collect evidence. Once we start relaxing our criteria on officer hires, we can't complain about their performance. That's why we need to choose only the best candidates. I feel like making law enforcement more attractive and giving them support will increase recruitment. Departments also need to work on getting the public's respect and trust back. I've seen way too many videos where good cops are getting attacked or abused by certain citizens. Who wants to be a police officer seeing this? Recruiting has a problem with packaging, let's make it more attractive for eligible individuals.
