Role #2 Negotiation and Conflict Management General Information Katia has just had a huge project dropped in her lap due to the resignation of a colleague. The organization is experiencing a downsizing. The project has a very tight deadline. It is due in two weeks. Katia's department is not to be affected by the layoffs, but she does not have adequate numbers of staff to complete the work on time. The general feelings amongst people who have escaped the layoff are relief as well as fear that their number coming up soon. Roger, Katia's boss, has a reputation for never giving in to requests of any kind. A mere twenty-four hours have passed since the project landed on Katia's desk, but Roger has requested a meeting to discuss the status. Confidential lnformation for Katia Katia believes that her predecessor has had the project for a month already, even though it appears that virtually no work has been done on it. Rodger was known to be very fond of Katia's predecessor, Ralph. Roger was grooming him as his own replacement when Roger moves up the ladder. Katia thinks that she might bring the project in on time if she gets authorization to hire temporary workers or to utilize people from another department who have already been given a ninety-day notice of termination. If none of those options work, then at a minimum she will have to figure out how to get her salaried staff to work excessive overtime, despite their fears of being let go. She wants assurances that she and her entire department will have continued employment for at least the coming year. She also wants to try to trade a promotion for getting this project done on time. Confidential information for Roger Roger is in a pickle. He knows that Ralph, the employee originally assigned to this project, did not properly address it. He knows that Ralph was spending all of his available time looking for a job. Unfortunately, Roger's superior holds Roger responsible for the delays as well as for the loss of Ralph's productivity. Roger may very well lose his job if this project fails. However, no funds are available to hire contract employees on a temporary basis; nor are funds available to delay the layoffs. Roger thinks people should be thankful to still have their jobs and do whatever is required. Nevertheless, he will try his best to motivate Katia to succeed here. He plans to offer her a promotion, if absolutely necessary.
