There has been considerable concern over the quality of the air on commercial airplanes, particularly with concerns about spread of Covid-19. Some people feel that current ventilation rates are inadequate and can lead to significant health problems. On the other hand, the airlines claim that higher ventilation rates are impractical because of rising fuel costs. There are a number of interesting articles discussing these issues. Ventilation systems on most airplanes have a ventilation rate of about 15cfm per maximum number of passengers (cubic feet per minute per passenger). Half of that flow is fresh air, while the other half is air taken from within the plane and processed through a HEPA filter which removes 99% of the virus particles in the air before being returned to the plane. Consider a plane with one passenger who is releasing 100,000 virus particles / min into the air. You can neglect settling of the particles (which is probably not a good assumption).
