Please tell us what happened to the elasticity of demand for essential items during the COVID 19 pandemic.

Please use specific examples in your discussion post, such as surgical masks, food, water, rent, etc. to answer the following questions:

  • In your opinion, is the demand for essential items elastic or inelastic during the COVID-19 pandemic? Why do you think so? Explain your answer in terms of economics.
  • Please select one specific good or service that has inelastic demand and share your own experiences in the real world.
  • Please select one specific good or service that has elastic demand and share your own experiences in your daily lives.

Elasticity of demandare measures of sensitivity of good's quality demanded to its price where another economic factors changes.

Elastic items .These are items or goods where change in price leads to change of demand.

Inelastic items. They are products which or where even if the price changes does not have any effect in the demand of the product.

Explanation:

During the coronavirus pandemic, the demand for essential items was inelastic. The need for the quantity of product is the same regardless of the price. For example, in the case of food, if the cost of food is raised, people will always have to eat, making the demand for such products remain the same, and in some cases, the market tends to increase. The total revenue will eventually rise since the need has not changed. One of the examples of good\services that is inelastic demand is prescription drugs. It doesn't matter the cost of these drugs in case a patient requires medication. An example of an elastic demand product is poultry. The decline of poultry over the years has led to a consumption increase. In some cases where the seller tends not to lower the price compared to others, his customers will switch to where prices favor them

Suggestions:

To make it perfect, please revise the last paragraph of your discussion post. Suggestions: 1. Add the word "supply" after "...decline of poultry", i.e. "The decline of poultry supply over the years..." 2. Change the words "consumption increase" to "price increase", i.e., "...has led to a price increase." 3. Replace the entire sentence "In some cases where..." with poultry substitutes, such as pork, turkey, etc. and discuss about how consumers change to purchasing poultry substitutes based on the prices, etc.
