Review and respond to the post below of Amber. Drawing on the weekly readings, suggest how strengths perspective, psychodynamic theory, or social learning theory can be used to further support the learners in their work with diverse clients.
Based on the humanistic approach that emphasizes the potential of an individual, strength-based theory encompasses the positive aspects of a client's efforts and human strengths (Work, 2022). Instead of focusing on what went wrong, this intervention uses what the individual is able to do to help themselves through conflict. At the Coleman Crisis Center, this approach is used most often by counselors when they meet a client where they are at during a crisis situation.
While discussing this topic with my supervisor, we reflected on how we use this approach in mental health situations. We encourage our client's to identify their strengths and help them develope plans to suceed in their future. Our time with client's is limited during our mobile calls. We must show up to a location of a mental health client in crisis, and help them to trust us to provide support for them. During this short time, we often do not have enough of a conversation to fully discuss what is going wrong and why. We must obtain as much information as possible and help them focus on the good that they can do in the situation. Our interactions with clients are brief and if we focus on the negative, we are only going to have enough time to discourage them and enable them to think about how bad everything is. If we only focus on the positive, we get directly to the conversation about how to improve from where they are at in the moment.
My supervisor and I also discussed cultural competence at the agency. She made a good point when we discussed the importance of this concept because of the population that we serve. Coleman is a 24/7 walk-in crisis center in Canton. The area is not the greatest, and we never know who will come in the door. Without cultural competence, we would not be able to create a theruputic relationship with the person as quickly as we need to. We must adapt to all situations and individuals regardless of the circumstances.
