Passage: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a powerful modality to image the human body. An MRI scanner has two principal components: A large static magnet creating a field Bo, and a radiofrequency (RF) antenna coil that can serve as a transmitter and receiver. MRI gets its contrast from interrogating the response of hydrogen nuclei (protons that are not part of other nuclei) in the magnetic field to a disturbance that is introduced by the RF transmitter. Bo RF2. With a carefully chosen sequence of RF pulses it is possible to synchronize the motion of the protons in the external field such that the total magnetic dipole moment of all the protons combined move like the axis of a spinning top in the external magnetic field. The tip ofthe vector that describes this total magnetic moment moves on a circular path around the direction of the magnetic field, in and out of the plane as shown in the figure below. Which of the following statements is true for the current that is induced into a RF antenna coil that is set up like in the picture? A. No current is induced. B. A constant, clockwise (when viewed from the right] current is induced. D. A current that changes direction with the rotation of the magnetic moment is induced. E. A continuously increasing current is induced
