The pandemic has severely damaged consumer and business confidence and this has the potential to greatly reduce aggregate demand. In these circumstances, Keynesians might argue it is crucial governments maintain expansionary monetary and fiscal policy in order to restore and maintain full employment. Sceptics would disagree. They might point out that government spending has already soared due to the pandemic and argue now is the time to reduce dangerously high levels of public debt. Also, with supply chains still recovering from the pandemic, some would worry that high inflation could soon be on the horizon.
