Post-harvest fungal contamination of corn is a significant health hazard in the industry. You have been asked to study the effect of UV radiation on fungal spores (Aspergillus niger). The idea is to expose the corn to UV light and inactivate the fungal spores. Three factors will be investigated, A = treatment time (number of pulses), B = distance between the corn particulates and the light, and C = input voltage of the UV lamp. The dependent variable is the log10 reduction of fungal spores. The factor ranges are listed in Table 1 below and the experimental design and results are in the sheet labeled corn on the EXCEL spreadsheet Examination 2b. (30) a. Provide your best and most comprehensive analysis of the data including a model. b. Provide an assessment of the efficacy of UV light for this application. c. Find the properties of UV light and comment on its use for this application. d. Make a final recommendation for this project. Is there an operating condition that would give reasonable reduction of fungal spores? Should additional data be collected? Should the project be abandoned, and other options considered?
