PostLab Questions 1. Compare your permanganate test results with the predictions you made before you did that part of the experiment. Also discuss cases in which your results do not match your predictions. 2. For each of the three tests you performed in this experimentthe permanganate, Fehling, and Tollens testspick a reaction with one of the test compounds that exhibited a positive result and write a chemical equation for it. Pick a different organic compound for each test. You must write the organic molecules that react and their products, but you need not include the initial and final states of the metals. Instead, put them over the reaction arrow. E.g., if you worked with methanol and it exhibited a positive result in the permanganate test, you could write the equation for the oxidation of this compound in this test. You will have written three equations by the time youre finished with this question. 3. Use your results to determine what functional group each of the two unknowns you worked with contained. Explain your reasoning. Hint: Look for patterns in the way your known compounds reacted in the three tests. For example, look for tests the alcohols did and did not react in.
