Preparation
Reflect on your average water use and how it compares to the national average and the averages of your classmates. Regardless if you are well above, below, or near "average" there is still room for improvement. Return to the required reading for some ideas on how to reduce your household water use.

Instructions
In your post, include the following:
- Propose a SMART goal for how to reduce your household water use. You can set a SMART goal for any of the activities we tracked in Part 1 of the lab. A SMART goal is created by following a framework that clearly defines a goal or objective with criteria so that you can measure your progress towards achievement. Use the table below to help craft your water conservation goal. Note that you do not need to answer all the questions in the table within your post. The questions are there to help guide your thinking as you craft your SMART goal. See the example post below.
- What are the major barriers that would prevent or make it hard to achieve your SMART goal?
S | Specific | What will be accomplished? What actions will you take? |
M | Measurable | What data will measure the goal? How well? |
A | Achievable | Is the goal doable? Realistic? Do you have the necessary skills and resources? |
R | Relevant | How does the goal align with broader goals? Why is the result important? |
T | Time-Bound | What is the time frame for accomplishing the goal? |
Example Post
Instructor's note: In my example post below, notice that my SMART goal is short but still meets all the requirements for a SMART goal. It is Specific (reduce car washing), Measurable (number of days between washes), Achievable (reduce by 50%), Relevant (reducing how often I wash the car reduces the amount of water I use), and Time-Bound (I will achieve my goal within 3 months). Remember to state your major barrier as well.
My SMART goal is to reduce how often I wash my car from 1 time per week to 1 time every two weeks. Since I go to an automatic car wash where the wash cycle (and the amount of water used) is standardized, this goal reduces the amount of water I use to wash my car by half. This goal is achievable and I will be able to measure my progress by marking on my calendar each time I visit the car wash. This way I can refer to the calendar and not return for at least 14 days. I will achieve this goal within 3 months and maintain it for at least another 3 months. My biggest barrier will be to change my habits and mindset around this activity. Each year I am gifted an unlimited membership to the neighborhood carwash and so I feel that I have to maximize its value by washing my car at every opportunity. I will work on changing my mindset by considering if my car is actually dirty or create a threshold for how dirty the car needs to get before washing. If I struggle, I will have a conversation with the gift giver to consider an alternative gift since not having the unlimited membership would financially disincentivize engaging in car washing if I am paying per wash each time I go to the car wash.
