DIVERSITY IN LEADERSHIP: Wilma Mankiller: Elnbodying Charisma, Authenticity. and Service in Leadership Bonhn Bathke Wilma Mankiller was an inspirational Indigenous leader who became the first female principal chief ofthe Cherokee Nation and was an advocate for the rights ofwomen and Native nations. Wilma Mankiller developed her leadership skills while promoting community development early in her career. Mankiller began as a community activist, serving as director ofthe Native American Youth Center in Oakland, California {Brando, n.d.}. There, she helped urban, Native American youth reconnect with their heritage to help prevent the spread of gang violence within that community. In 1977, she moved back to the Cherokee Nation in her home state of Oklahoma and founded the Community Development Department for the Cherokee Nations. There she led a project that brought water to over 200 families in the Cherokee community of Bell, Oklahoma. Her continued efforts on behalf ofthe Cherokee Nation culminated with her becoming the Principal Chief ofthe Cherokee Nation in 1985, a role in which she served for 10 years. Mankiller's leadership style focused on consensus building, incorporating the needs and voices ofthe community members she sought to help. Always mindful ofthe role that her culture played in her leadership style, Wilma Mankiller said: IfI am to be remembered, I want it to be because I am fortunate enough to have become my tribe's first female chief. But I also want to be remembered for emphasizing the fact that we have indigenous [sic] solutions to our problems. {Mankiller 8; 'Nallace, 1993, as cited in 'Wilson, n.d.) Under her leadership, the population ofthe Cherokee Nation grew from 68,000 to 170,000 and tribal employment doubled {Brando, n.d.; United States Mint, 2021}. The profits from tribal enterpriseswhich came from a diversity of sources, such as hospitality; gaming, several factories, and natural resourcesincreased by almost Wilma Mankiller. 200% {'Wilson, n.d.}. Additionally, she expanded the Head Start program on the reservation, opened three rural health centers, and developed a center for the prevention of drug abuse. On a national level, she helped create the Office of Tribal Iustice, under the US Department of Justice, which addresses legal and policy-related issues pertinent to Native nations. She also helped found the Women Empowering Women for Indigenous Nations, an organization dedicated to cultivating traditional leadership roles among Indigenous women.
