Problem 1: 1 kg of air as an ideal gas undergoes a Carnot power cycle between two thermal reservoirs with temperatures of 750K and 300K. The first process of this cycle is isothermal compression. a) Sketch the cycle on p-V and T-s diagrams and clearly identify all processes involved on both diagrams, their initial and final states, and the direction of each process. b) Determine the cycle thermal efficiency. c) Determine amount of energy transferred by heat transfer to the air during isothermal expansion if work done on air during isothermal compression is W1-2 = -30kJ. Use the 1st law of thermodynamics and the Clausius statement for the Carnot cycles (relation between temperatures and heat transfers). d) Determine work during adiabatic compression and adiabatic expansion. e) Determine the cycle work. f) Determine the change of entropy in kJ/K for each of the processes involved in the cycle. g) Determine the total change of entropy in this cycle.
