Problem 23
A mixture (gas) of methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO) is fed to an incinerator at
a rate of 800kmolh. The mixture contains methane at 75mol%. The unit is also fed
with air (oxygen at 21mol% and nitrogen at 79mol%) at 50% excess. In the reactor,
which operates under steady state conditions, 80% of the methane and 90% of the
carbon monoxide fed are being destroyed via the following reactions:
CH4+2O2CO2+2H2O
CO+0.5O2CO2
Find the molar composition and the molar flow rate of the stream exiting the reactor.
