Problem 4: Wildlife Water Tank Contamination You are approached by a wildlife management official for assistance on abating a chemical pollution. She tells you that a large 20,000 gallon wildlife drinking water tank in a remote location is contaminated with a toxin, very likely added by an unethical poacher. To simulate the natural drinking conditions of the animals, the water tank is mostly submerged underground and does not have a drain hole at the bottom. She tells you that she has no pump or power supply to drain the underground tank. She only has a freshwater pipe with a valve and unlimited supply of freshwater. As the ground is sandy, the water discharged on the ground will percolate easily and will not cause any issues. She has decided to keep on adding freshwater to the tank until the toxin concentration drops below 1% of the initial concentration. As an engineer, your task is to do write the 6 steps and develop an MBE and tell her the time in hours she has to run the water. The chemical slowly disintegrates with exposure to sunlight and ambient air. However, for the present calculation, you can ignore the chemical reactions. Valve Information you have: Flow from hose = 300 L per min Volume of tank = 20,000 gallons T Hose Overflow Assume: X mg/L to be the toxin concentration at any time t Inflow = outflow Incoming water is freshwater (no toxin) Show Steps 1-6
