Problem Statement: There is a growing body of research that suggests that the lower levels of sense of belonging among underrepresented college students could be a contributing cause to their relatively lower rates of persistence and retention in comparison to their peers who are not underrepresented. Beyond a standard framework that caters to the requirements of students from backgrounds that are not underrepresented, a good program must diversify beyond that framework and consider the many needs that students have at different points in their college careers. 

Underrepresented and traditionally underserved college students (first-generation, Black, Hispanic, and Native) who do not cultivate a strong feeling of belonging to their institution frequently stray from the institution before achieving their academic goals. This is something that I see occurring very frequently. The resources that are available are neither adequate nor sufficient to provide real help.

Purpose statement below:

This qualitative study aims to investigate the determinants that impact the feeling of inclusion among minority college students in California. The research will include interviews and focus groups as data collection methods, targeting a sample of 20 participants who self-identify as first-generation, Black, Hispanic, or Native pupils. The study seeks to comprehend the students' perception of their academic and social encounters, as well as their strategies for dealing with the difficulties associated with being underrepresented. The study aims to find the most effective strategies and suggestions for improving the sense of inclusion and retention of disadvantaged students in higher education

What are the experiences and coping mechanisms that underrepresented college students in the state of California go through when confronted with the obstacles of belonging and staying in higher education?
