Project Charter

SCENARIO

Choosing Your Case

During this course you will use the same scenario for your discussions and case study activities. In this assignment you will be determining the basic information related to that scenario. You must choose a group that will be involved in a trip. You can select any type of trip: an extended family vacation, a school reunion, an outdoor adventure with friends, a travel-based business event or meeting, or any other group trip in which you are interested. However, the trip you elect to plan must meet the following high-level requirements:

  • A five-member core group of stakeholders (a project council) will function as the sponsor of your trip and will need to approve the project charter, which you will create.Note that the definition of stakeholder according to PMI is "an individual, group, or organization who may affect, be affected by, or perceive itself to be affected by a decision, activity, or outcome of a project"and that is the definition we are using here.
  • The group must consist of a minimum of 20 adult members. The trip can also involve children.
  • Members must be from at least 2different countries in 2different time zones.
  • The trip needs to last for a minimum of seven days.
  • The trip will take place in the next year.

Assignment

In thisassignment, we would like you to recall what you have learned about project charters and apply those concepts to develop a project charter for your group trip.

As explained in Section A, the project charter is used to formally authorize the project. Therefore, it needs to address the objectives andrequirements of the projectand summarize the key aspects of the trip. In other words, it briefly states what the trip is and why it is to take place.
