The Better Me: Better World Project allows students to focus on their own personal growth as it relates to developing effective leadership skills that can be later used to support stronger communities, organizations, and more. NSLS members who complete the Better Me: Better World Project will be equipped to demonstrate the NSLS 9 Principles and Behaviors of Leadership.

Step 1: Determine Your Project Scope
Part A - Come up with a title for your Better World Project
Part B - Select topics for your Better World Project scope
Your Better Me: Better World Project must include elements from all 5 Leadership Development categories listed below.
- Physical Development
- Intellectual Pursuits
- Emotional Care
- Ethics
- Service to Others
Project Scope Example:
- Come up with an entire weight-lifting program (Physical Development)
- Read 10 memoirs from noted leaders and write a paper (Intellectual Pursuits)
- Listen to a meditation app 5 days a week (Emotional Care)
- Take an online ethics course specific to your industry (Ethics)
- Mentor a peer through goal-setting strategies for 3 months (Service to Others)
Step 2: Make a Project Plan
While this is not a finalized version of your project, and you may have twists and turns along the way, starting with a basic plan will help you achieve your goals.
Your plan should include:
- The main goal of the project (with 2-3 sub-goals if necessary)
- A list of resources you need to successfully complete the project (ex. access to a gym)
- A list of key stakeholders who can help you with your project and/or who could benefit from your project
- A short description of your project in paragraph form
