3. Team Charter & Purpose Statement of the Team

On an individual level, people who understand their team's wider purpose are happier, more engaged, and more creative. When individual members see how their roles fit with the team's goals, people work harder, use their initiative, and make sensible decisions about their work. In turn, the team can operate more efficiently. These are easier to attain when group members agree, understand and believe in WHY they are pursuing something together.

4. Team Objectives & Metrics

After developing your team's purpose, the next step is to determine your objectives, which describe the desired result or outcome of your team's project. Objectives are the target and the foundation for keeping track of progress; they keep the group and the project focused.

In developing your objectivesbe sure they are"S-M-A-R-T":

1.Specific: Objectives should be focused, clear, and unambiguous. Being specific sets expectations on the same level and helps everyone get on the same page. Specific objectives are easier to measure, too.

2.Measurable: Objectives that are measurable allow you to track and report progress; they help define success and help you see where you need to make adjustments to be more effective.

3.Attainable:Objectivesshould be realistic but require a stretch or effort to reach them. The objective can't be out of reach or below what is reasonably achievable.

4.Relevant:Relevance means that objectives are aligned with the scope of the assignment and the intent of your purpose. Objectives that don't align well with either become a distraction, and irrelevant objectives may even confuse team members.

5.Timely: The elements of your project must have start and end dates and are often best determined by planning backwards from the date of your deliverable. This creates focus and urgency for the project.
