Project: Part 1

Attached Files:

  • Math 1005 Project - Part I Template.docx(13.085 KB)
  • Project Part I Rubric.pdf(41.354 KB)
  • sleep.sav(22.701 KB)
  • sleep_codebook.docx(26.959 KB)

Background:

For this project, you will be analyzing data about sleep. You will be using the same data set (sleep.sav) for the entire project. At the end of the project you will be determining what variables cause different sleep patterns/problems.

This is a real data file condensed from a study conducted to explore the prevalence and impact of sleep problems on various aspects of people's lives. Staff from a university in Melbourne, Australia were invited to complete a questionnaire containing questions about their sleep behavior (e.g. hours slept per night), sleep problems (e.g. difficulty getting to sleep) and the impact that these problems have on aspects of their lives (work, driving, relationships). The sample consisted of 271 ranging in age from 18 to 84 years.

The project will be broken down into five parts. Each part will be submitted individually: Part 1 is due in week 3, Part 2 is due in week 7, Part 3 is due in week 10, Part 4 is due in week 13, and Part 5 is due in week 16.

Part 1 Instructions:

1) Using the document titled Math 1005 Project - Part I Template, determine if each variable included in the sleep.sav data set is quantitative (continuous, numerical) or qualitative (categorical) and then give its level of measurement.

2) Using SPSS, produce the descriptive statistics for those continuous variables and Frequencies for categorical data. Remember to choose options to show all results.

3) Create an appropriate graph for each variable. For example, for the variable 'Gender' you may wish to create a bar graph since 'Gender' is a binary variable. Export the output results from question #2 and #3 into a Word document.

4) Interpret each variable in 1 - 2 sentences using the descriptive statistics and graphs.

Remember: All parts of the project must contain a title page in AMA format, running header, and page numbers. Each submitted assignment will also be critiqued to college writing level standards (grammar, mechanics, sentence structure, etc.).

If you're new to using the AMA Style Guide, or have never used AMA before, thisAMA Style Guide, prepared by the UNE Librarians, can help you to ensure that your writing meets the style standards. If you have a more in-depth question about style than the Style Guide can answer, you can also access the entire text of theAMA Manual of Stylethrough the UNE Library.
