Project Requirements

Pretty much any topic in the area of wireless networking can be explored as a project. The two criteria to consider when selecting a project are (1) are you going to learn something and (2) is the project practical. Practicality means that the project scope is well defined and limited so it can be completed in about four weeks and the resources needed to execute the project are readily available.

Here are some things to consider when defining your project:

The project needs to result in a concrete outcome that will offer an interesting result or insight. Ultimately, the primary goal is that you learn something.

You must have the necessary background to complete the project.

The project needs to be feasible. For example, the amount of effort must be reasonable given the time available and you must have access to the infrastructure needed to execute the project.

Example Projects

Below is a list of projects that you might consider. The example projects are just rough ideas. Many variants are possible and it is your responsibility to work out the details, e.g. identify what specific tasks are needed, how much work is involved, etc. You can also define your own project.

I choosed Wireless Link Characterization - Perform a study on how differences between the cards (e.g. with respect to packet capture) affect interoperability and performance in hybrid networks.

Project Proposal The project proposal will typically be no more than one page and should include the following information:

  • Name of student
  • Project topic and title
  • A very brief description of your current plans with respect to what you will do and what platform you will use
  • Timeline (Project Proposal is due in Week 2 with the final project due in Week 6. Map out what you plan to accomplish in weeks 3, 4 and 5.)

Project Checkpoints There will be two project checkpoints. Checkpoints are short status reports that cover the following:

  • Progress so far: what was completed
  • Any results so far
  • Problems encountered
  • Changes in the project plan

Final Project Report - Unless we have made different arrangements, the final project paper should be at least eight (8) double-spaced pages, not counting any figures, screen shots, tables, reference list, cover page, etc. You must use at least seven references, all from published, reliable literature (i.e., don't use sites like WikiPedia as your source). You may, of course, have more than seven references but at least seven need to use published, peer-reviewed literature. Please use APA style when formatting your paper.
