Project type: Art Area of Development: intellectual Short Description: Coffee Filter Butterflies Materials Used: coffee filters, food coloring, bowls, clothes pins, smocks (to protect child's clothing), and pipe cleaners Give each child a coffee filter and let them dip parts of it into bowls of food coloring mixed with water so that the color absorbs into the filter. Allow the children freedom to choose different colors and as many as they would like. Next, let the filter dry and then have the child scrunch the filter in the middle and put the clothes pin on as the body of the butterfly. Finally, let the children glue pipe cleaners on for antennas. Behavioral Objective: Upon completion of the project, the children will discover that coffee filters absorb color and blend together to form new shades. Questions asked during the project: 1) Have you ever seen a butterfly? 2) Where did you see one? 3) What color was the butterfly you saw?
