The topic was "Think of an experience you, a family member, or a friend has had with healthcare. Gauge the experience against the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) six aims, and identify any opportunities for improvement." The post is below
In 2018. my father underwent surgery for thyroid cancer and a thoracic herniated disc. This experience had many benets and downsides that can be expressed against the Institute of Medicine's llOM) six aims. Safe: The staff at the hospital treated us like family and kept us informed through the whole process. My only concern was both surgeries were performed back to back but the staff assured us this would not be an issue other than his recovery time would be longer. The thyroid surgeon was a family friend and his willingness to travel made my father feel safe. All protocols and performance from the staff was followed professional and accurate. Timely: The surgery was scheduled in a timer manner and it gave us time to travel and book our hotel. The total timing of both surgeries was approximately4 hours. It took about 40 minutes longer than expected, which was concerning. Nobody came to tell us it would take longer, we had to go and ask a staff member what was happening. Overall. improvement was needed in areas of communicating effectively and taking concerns seriously. Effective: l was extremely pleased with the successful results. The thyroidectomy incision was about 2 to 4 cm above his clavicle. Skin glue was used to close the incision making the recovery less painful and not leaving any scars. I do believe surgery for the herniated disc was the best option considering therapy like decompression would be long term due to the location of the disc. Efcient: I did not see any staff member waste anything or complete any unnecessary duties. The cost of both surgeries were high but fortunately this was completely covered by my fathers insurance. Equitable: My family and I did not experience any discrimination regarding our gender, ethnicity. socioeconomic status, or geographic location. Patient-centered: All of the staff members and providers treated my father with kindness and respect. My father can be a difficult person to deal with and he has very unique characteristics. This be said, I believe the actions and responsiveness by the staff were slightly adjusted to make my fathers experience less stressful. Adaptability is one of the most important skills a health professional can master which is one of the reasons why we chose this hospital. Reference Joshi, M. B.,Nash, D.
