The nature vs. nurture debate is a very hot topic when it comes to human growth and development. It is based around the debate of how much of a person's development or characteristics are based on nature or nurture. Nature is referring to biological factors such as genetics and nurture is referring to upbringing or how one is raised.
Our lifespan development is strongly influenced by both nature and nurture. Nature is relating to biological factors. Therefore, our physical development can be influenced by our genetic predispositions. For example, our eye and hair color are factors that are affected by nature. But, on the other hand factors such as weight are influenced by nurture. Nurture is more specific to the environment we live in and includes things such as nutrition, culture, and access to resources. It is wrong to say that we are only influenced by nature or nurture and not both because as shown in the examples I have given they both vary into our lifespan development. On top of that without nature we can not have nurture and vis versa. If there are no genetics to make up our bodies there is no need to nurture the non existent body. As well as, if there is no one to nurture us there is no need to make us in the first place.
Nature and nurture also relates to language development because some children are genetically predisposed to have better language abilities than other. For example, a child with down syndrome will have a lower level of language ability than a child without down syndrome. But, on top of that how these language abilities develop is based on the environment in which that child grows up in. If a child is not placed in school where they are forced to challenge their language abilities they will never see any improvements. As well as, if a child is always spoken for they will never learn to speak for themselves. Therefore, nature and nurture place a large role in lifespan development overall including language development.
