Presenting Issue/Identify Career Concerns

Shamika stated she decided to see this counselor because she has been struggling at work and has been calling in a lot. She reports she is concerned because people her age should be in or have found a career they want by now. She reports she is not satisfied with the job she has now as a corrections officer. Shamika reports her job is not an ideal job for her but took the position because the pay was more, and the benefits were better. Shamika states she also feels some anxiety walking into a maximum-security prison and changing career again so late in life. She stated she feels cut off from the world when she is there, and she does not feel she has ever found a job that she has really enjoyed outside of working with clients. Shamika reports she currently has a 4.0 grade point average in school and does not have any worries about it.

Shamika has been working as a correctional officer for 3 years. She reports she does not like the career she is in currently and has some feeling of anxiety when she goes in which leads to her calling off often. Shamika reports she only took the position because of the pay. She reported prior to her current position she was a health case manager for a non-for-profit organization which she enjoyed doing. She reports she never called off and made sure she was at work on time each day. Shamika stated she enjoyed the day-to-day operation of the facility as well as the environment. She reports she left that position when her family purchased a home and moved away from the area. Shamika also reports previous employment as a behavioral health technician and CAN. She states she also liked the jobs themselves, but the pay was not enough to maintain a family which during that time she had just had her child.
