Providence Medical Center is experiencing a shortage of coders. Over the past five years, there has been a 30% vacancy rate for coders throughout the main hospital and satellite clinics within the healthcare system. The backlog and vacant positions has created an issue related to unbilled revenue, overworked coders and extended work hours and schedules. It is estimated that there is an annual loss of $12 million. It has also been communicated that many of the qualified coders that were offered a position declined because they are interested in working from home. To address the problem you, the HIM Director, met with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and proposed a home-based coding system. This concept is technologically feasible, given that Providence Medical Center utilizes an electronic health record and all patient information is available electronically. The CFO presented the proposal to the hospital's governing board and received approval for the home-based coding system. Because of your experience as a project manager with a previous employer, the CFO assigned you the role of the project manager to oversee the feasibility and implementation of this project.

As the project manager, you decide to hold a meeting to discuss project plans with the clinical supervisors of Providence Medical Center. Prior to the meeting, one of the supervisors asks about the differences and connections between a project, project management, and project manager. The supervisor also asks why project management is important in healthcare when it is traditionally used as a business methodology. You, the project manager, decide to address these questions during the meeting and also include your competencies and skills as a project manager in healthcare.

Create a written documentation and be sure to complete the following tasks:

  • Explain the terms project, project management, and project manager.
  • Describe how project management is used in healthcare.
  • Evaluate the differences between general project management and project management in healthcare.
  • Assess the competencies and skills of a project manager in healthcare.
