Psychologist AlbertMehrabiandemonstrated that 93% of communication is nonverbal. Thanks to millions of years of evolution, we are genetically wired to respond differently to visuals than text. And, when it comes to quick, clear communication, visuals trump text almost every time. In this assignment, you will be taking a complex concept and simplifying it in a drawing.Have you heard the statement "a picture is worth a 1,000 words"? Do a good job. However, remember that this is NOT an Art class. The new Common Core standards in kindergarten -12th grade require students to demonstrate learning. One way is by drawing pictures, then explaining what they drew. If a 5th grader can do this type of assignment in less than 30 minutes, you surely can. Don't over think it...and don't stress. It's just another way to demonstrate your learning. Let's think outside the box and have some fun with this assignment.

Points will be given for color, detail, correctness, completeness, following directions, and creativity.

Instructions:

  1. ReadThe Power of Visual Communication(Links to an external site.)
  2. On an 8 1/2 " x 11" paper, draw a picture of 2 or more people having a conversation. Use the images in your textbook for reference.
  3. Include images of what you think the 8 essential components ofcommunication(source, message, channel, receiver, feedback, environment, context, and interference)look like in your picture.
  4. Label the 8 essential components of communication that you drew so that I know you understand the concepts.
  5. Include 1 environmental cue and 1 context (either language or culture).
  6. If your drawing is:
  • Hand drawn - Scan it into your computer or take a CLEAR picture with your SMART phone or digital camera. (Points will be taken off for unclear, unreadable pictures)

8.Upload your picture/file.

The 2ndpart of the assignments is a short reflection. In a numbered list, respond to the prompts below. Include the prompt and explain:

  1. What Professor Damon will see depicted in your picture.
  2. the 8 essential components of communication and how they were depicted in your drawing.
  3. the environmental cue you used and why you used it
  4. the context (language or culture) and why you used it
  5. whether this conversation is considered personal (between 2 or more people),(conversation with yourself), group, mass, or public.
  6. Contrast a primary, secondary, and auxiliary message and explain what type of message your conversation is portraying.

Tip: Write your reflection in a word processor. Check for spelling and grammar. Copy and paste it into the Assignment'safter uploading your file or include it in your file.

Failure to include both parts -- the drawing (part 1) or the reflection (part 2) --15 points (out of 20 total points)to be immediately taken off the assignment.
