Psychologist Muzafer Sherif examined the effects of "in group vs out group behavior" in two groups of 11-12 year old boys at a summer camp. The boys did not know they were part of a study or what the study was about, Sherif deliberately set the two randomly assigned groups of campers against each other by having competitions with trophies for the winners and pitting them against each other. Sherif manipulated the outcomes so that the final game scores were always extremely close to maximize competition between the two. He observed many types of in-group behaviors such as prejudice, name calling and aggressive act. The final stage of Sherif's experiment involved the two groups of boys working together towards a common goal and all the boys were friends by the end of the three week. If you were on the IRB for this study would you have allowed it to be conducted? Why or why not? What other information might you want to know?
