Public Advocacy means adopting a critical perspective and adopting a critical perspective, "simply means that we question and engage what we experience, never taking it for granted" (Warren & Foss, 2012). Unfortunately, this is not always a strategy that people in positions of influence adopt. 1. Compose two lists: one list of public figures who seem to adopt a critical perspective, and a second list of public figures who do not seem to adopt a critical perspective. 2. Work to determine what characteristics or signals each public figure provides to tell you how critical they are. 1. Please define your understanding of public speaking as advocacy and provide an example of when you or someone you know has advocated for a certain issue, idea, or cause. 2. Please list two ways that we can practice advocacy and public speaking in ethical ways AND explain why each is important to consider. 3. Define communication as constitutive and, in 2- 3 sentences, provide an example that demonstrates the importance of the constitutive process.
