Purpose: Queer culture is vast and incredibly diverse, and that richness of experience leaves a lot of room for exploration and inquiry. This assignment will allow you to "dive deep" on one piece of queer culture of your choosing and explore its linkages to a specific identity and community. Different perspectives are highlighted in this analysis to deepen its criticality and strengthen your conclusions.
Choose an artistic cultural product created by a queer artist (Ezra Miller) (Productsare the tangible or intangible creations of a particular culture. They reflect a culture's perspectives. Tangible products: paintings, a cathedral, a piece of literature, a pair of chopsticks Intangible products: an oral tale, a dance, a sacred ritual, a system of education, a law)
Your choice should showcase an element of queer/sexual minority identity or community. You can choose a literary (prose, poetry), visual, spatial (e.g., architecture, place), or musical piece. Examples to get you started are included in this week's recommended readings and resources, but you can also search for and locate your own queer cultural product of interest. You must be able to access your chosen cultural product through provided links or your own resources and include a copy of or a link to your cultural product in your assignment.
Analyze the cultural product itself for its relevance to queer identity and/or community. Your written analysis should include:
- Thorough description of your chosen element - This should be a more extensive summary than you are used to providing: present this as though to someone who would not otherwise have access to your product, except through this description. (This description should not include any analysis, but rather a straightforward, objective, neutral description of the product.)
- Discussion of the creator/creators. Who made this? When was it created? Did the creators say anything about this piece, either when it was created or in response to its reception?
- Discussion of the critical and popular reception of this product, both at the time of its release and more recently (if applicable). How relevant was and is this product to the queer community?
- Analysis of the cultural product itself for its relevance to queer identity and/or community. What is its significance? How or why does it speak to or for queer people? What message related to queerness do you understand it to be sending?
- Finally, in your reflective conclusion: how do you respond to this cultural product? What emotions and thoughts does it elicit? How did those responses change, if at all, throughout the course of completing this assignment? How did learning more about this product influence your view of it and/or the LGBTQ+ community it aimed to represent or reach?
