EXPERIMENT: ACCELERATION DUE TO GRAVITY PURPOSE: To measure the acceleration of an object falling freely in a vacuum. 1 = 0.0 s PROCEDURE: A long vacuum tube made of plastic was built to allow a steel ball to be released at the instant a high speed flash camera t = 0.05 s began to run. The flashes occur every 0.05 s. The resulting photograph is shown to the right actual size (i.e., 1 cm in the photograph is equivalent to 1 cm of fall). 1 . Measure the displacement after each time interval and record in tabular form. t = 0.10 s 2. Always make your measurements from the bottom of the ball. 3. Plot the displacement vs. time graph for the falling ball on the upper half of the graph paper. 4. Plot a graph of velocity vs. time on the lower half of the graph paper by calculating the average velocity for each successive time period and plotting this value at the time at which the average velocity occurred. 5. Determine the instantaneous velocity at the 0.10 s point from the d/t graph. 6. Determine the acceleration of the falling ball from the vit graph. t = 0.15 s 7. What conclusion can you draw regarding the acceleration due to gravity in the free fall from the experiment? 8. If a glass marble had been used instead of the steel ball in this experiment how would this have affected the results? CONCLUSION: Your conclusion will consist of the answers to questions 5, 6 ,7 & 8 in the procedure
