Q.1 A total feed of 100 kmol/h having a composition of 60.0 mol % n-pentane and 40.0 mol % n-heptane is to be fractionated at 1.0 atm total pressure to give a distillate containing 95.0 mol % n-pentane and bottoms containing 5.0 mol % n-pentane. Equilibrium data are given below at 1.0 atm as mole fractions of n-pentane. If the feed enters as:
(i) Sub-cooled liquid at 10 oC.
(ii) Saturated vapor at the bubble point
(iii)Mixture of liquid and vapor at 60 oC.
(iv)Saturated vapor at the dew point.
(v) Super-heated vapor at 100 oC.
In each case use the graphical methods of McCabe-Thiele to calculate:
(a) The amount of distillate and bottoms in kmol/h.
(b) The minimum number of theoretical plates.
(c) The minimum reflux ratio and the minimum boilup ratio.
(d) If the actual reflux ratio R = 1.50 Rmin, determine the number of theoretical plates.
(e) Determine the feed tray number. (f) Determine the boilup ratio.
(g) Determine the condenser and reboiler heat duties. In your solution, use only HAND calculations and drawings.
