Q1. Yes, No, Okay but..." Activity Overview
In Chapter 4 of They Say, I Say you read about the three ways to respond to an argument: disagreeing and explaining why (pp. 56-59); agreeing but with a difference (pp. 59-62); agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously (pp. 62-65). Now you have a chance to practice these skills and start working on your second essay.
To complete this assignment, you will need to complete the activity and reflect on what you did.
Directions
In one or more paragraphs, write an introduction for your second essay. In doing so, you should "declare [your] position relative to views you've summarized or quoted [so] readers [aren't left] wondering,
'Is this [person] agreeing or disagreeing? Is [s/he] for what this other person has said, against it, or what?'" (Graff & Birkenstein
54). You should also use at least one template from the reading for this unit and one template from the first three chapters of the book (which we read in Modules 1 and 2). When you use the templates, please bold them and underline them in your paragraph so they stand out.
After writing your introduction, reflect on what you learned in this chapter of They Say, I Say and in this activity. You should also address what the authors are urging you to do when you write an argument and why they say it's important. End by reflecting on how you can apply what you've learned in your own writing.
Tip: Remember that we have done readings about introductions, which included a number of strategies you might try. This includes "Introductions" by UNC Chapel Hill's Writing Center. You might also try one of the strategies from "Resources for Writers: Introduction Strategies" from MIT's Comparative Media Studies. In reviewing these strategies, be sure to pay attention to the "Five Kinds of Less Effective Introductions" (on the UNC link), and remember that not all strategies listed in these sources are right for all papers (and not all are equally effective in general)
