Soapberry bugs from Florida were introduced to golden rain trees in Davis in about 1993. Bugs can be found on all three species of golden rain trees, but the most common tree on the UCD campus is "Koelreuteria paniculata". You can see a tree with bugs living beneath it on the south side of Wellman Hall. The tree is in a concrete pot at ground level near the bike racks. it is to the right if you face the below ground entrance to Wellman. The bugs you will be looking at in lab were collected from local golden rain trees. For these insects, the balloon vine is the introduced food source.
