Q3. A variable speed drive (friction drive) used to drive a fiber roll winder is schematically shown below. In this system, 1st tapered disc (Number 1 in the Figure) is driven by an electric motor. This motion is transferred to the 3rd tapered disc (having same size with the first one) by means of an intermediate roller (Number 2 in the Figure). The speed of rotation of the roll can be adjusted by moving the intermediate disc back and forth as shown in the Figure. In order to obtain an uniform roll, the fiber should be wound to the roll with a speed of 2m/sec (This value must be constant). The speed of electric motor which drives first tapered disc is 720 rpm. The minimum and maximum diameters of the twin tapered disc are given as dmin=50mm and dmax=120mm respectively. The diameter of the intermediate disc is 60mm, the friction coefficient between the discs is 0,4 and the preload between the discs is 60N. a) Find the maximum and minimum speed ratios of this drive. b) Calculate the maximum and minimum rotational speed of the roll. c) Calculate the maximum and minimum diameter of the roll. d) Find the maximum force on the fiber
