As managers and leaders it is important that we innovate and develop highly customized managerial methods and approaches. At times, a simple fact or research finding can encourage us to think and begin to design an effective managerial approach. Based on, "People who know their personality, values and understand/ manage their own and others' emotions make better leaders," and informed by this week's concepts, tell us how you plan to master the art of managing your and others' emotions to facilitate a healthy workplace and ensure great performance. Be sure to propose an approach or a set of best practices that is unique and directly stems from your relevant knowledge, experiences, and observations.
Emotional intelligence is one of the primary skills which need to be shown in a manager/ leader. As stated by McShane, S., Tasa, K., & Steen, S. (2021), emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and regulate one's own emotions and other people's emotions.
Emotions influence almost everything we do in the workplace. It is usually initiated by perceptions of the world around us. Most organizations have recognized that employees' positive emotions influence their attitudes and behavior.
Handling a leadership position would be very stressful in an organization, but an effective manager stays in relative control, calmly assessing the situation and identifying the appropriate path forward. Most organizations train their employees on emotional intelligence. According to McShane, S., Tasa, K., & Steen, S. (2021).) Admiral Group, one of the best employers in the United Kingdom and Canada, has a 'Ministry of Fun' committee that generates positive emotions through in-office games, afternoon outings, and crazy events such as painting the boss's face, etc., ALso the Fidelity Canada has introduced emotional intelligence training for the new hires along with other soft skills and technical education. In that way, employees will tend to show more positive emotions, attitudes, and behaviors in the workplace, eventually reaching the organization's end goal with fewer conflicts.
In my opinion, all employees in a workplace need to have vital emotional intelligence and empathy. This can be done in such ways,
- Boost employee engagement by sharing a high level of organizational developments
- Encouraging staff questions and 360-degree feedback programs
- Provide leadership learning experiences such as cross-functional workgroups in important meetings.
- Can inspire the loyalty and productivity of the team by offering appreciation when earned
However, all organizations should conduct emotional intelligence training and other fun activities to succeed in a healthy workplace.
