Event Speech Nike's freshwater usage reduction 2025 target
Thank you everyone for being here with us today. Nike is incredibly pleased to be with you today to share our target and encourage you all to race toward a better tomorrow together with us.
Nike is committed to responsibilities in social and environmental sustainability. We are a member of several corporate responsibility and sustainability organisations. Today I would like to focus on our 2025 freshwater usage reduction target.
As you all might already realise that freshwater scarcity has become a global issue affecting every country. Only 0.5% of Earth's water is available freshwater that must be shared between the entire world. Industries around the world highly depend on water as it is used for production, supply chain and retail. This issue is very important for NIKE because we have our supply chain spanning globally and have an impact on local water issues. We, as a world leading manufacturer of sports equipment and apparel, firmly believe that we can lead the way in reducing water consumption with help and support of everyone here. We believe that, to protect our planet, we don't wait for solutions, we create them.
Looking back, Nike aimed to build a water-resilient source base with world-class water efficiency and innovative wastewater management. We achieved and significantly exceeded our water reduction target by engaging with our suppliers to create awareness, drive commitment, and build capability. We innovate and encourage the adaptation of new approaches that help reduce water use in our supply chain. Looking ahead, we will continue to leverage our tools and are expanding the framework of our water risk program to cover most of our production and material volume. In FY20 we achieved a 30% freshwater reduction, exceeding our target. As we plan to bring down the water footprint close to zero as much as possible, we are now committed to a FY25 target at 25% reduction in freshwater use per kg in textile dyeing and finishing. To achieve our target, we will continue to focus on capability building with our suppliers to optimize their wastewater recycling systems while creating awareness and driving commitments.
We believe our industry must be aware, commit and innovate dramatically to make a better impact to the environment and community. Protecting the environment and resources are our core inspirations; with every product, we are making a positive impact on people and the environment.
It is a pleasure being with you here today, sharing our commitment and goals. We have an opportunity and responsibility to take care of our environment, our people, inspire and encourage everyone and those young generations to make the world a better place as we believe that sport should always have a future.

Press Release
Nike 2025 targets 25%in freshwater use per kg in textile dyeing and finishing" "13 billionlitters restore through a portfolio of watershed projects"
NIKE continues working on our freshwater reduction target. This work will remain a core part of our supply chain water stewardship program and our ongoing supply chain risk management efforts. In FY20 we exceeded our target and achieved a 30% of freshwater reduction.
We now commit to a FY25 water reduction target of 25% from our FY20 baseline.
What we will do
We will continue our successful organic cotton blending program and expand recycled cotton blending for apparel. We will advance our watershed-restoration work in vulnerable regions of our cotton supply chain
We will reduce water use and improve wastewater treatment in textile dyeing and finishing. We will focus on building capability with our suppliers.
Why it is important for us, why water matters
Water scarcity has become a global crisis. Only 0.5% of the Earth's water is available freshwater that must be shared between human, wildlife and environment. In terms of Nike's supply chain, 91%of NIKE's overall water footprint ties directly to materials sourcing and manufacturing. We are aware of it and strongly believe that it is crucial for NIKE to ensure our responsibility in freshwater use in our supply chain, and our part as much as we can to minimize our freshwater footprint.
Upcoming Event
NIKE will host a event in Australia to share our target and concern with the government and communities to to raise awareness and encourage responsible freshwater use
