Question 1 focuses on the United Parcel Service (UPS) and has four parts. UPS has two different business groups; ground transport of packages and their air transport business. Historically they were rivals but now have to work together to deliver packages as fast as possible. Trucks pick up packages and bring them to sorting facilities, they are then taking to the airport to send them where they need to go and then trucks take them to the distribution center and finally deliver them to the destination. For many years there was considerable animosity between the groups at the employee and managerial levels. This question makes use of the strategy implementation "pentagram" and the list of characteristics of of firms based on how they create value (Task environment). These slides are part of the slide deck in the module section and in the Panapto video.

Question 1A: Assume you are working for UPS, in the task focus component, how is UPS creating value? which strategy would you say UPS is following? Choose between managing uncertainty, maintaining portfolio diversity or dealing with Related diversification (interdependence). Justify your answer.

Question 1B: Within the structure component what organizational structure would you use to effectively run UPS? As above, explain your answer.

Question 1C: From the standpoint of who to hire, what typr of CEO and top management team would you want to run UPS? How does this fit with the structure component?

Question 1D: Lastly, How would you reward the top managers and potentially employees given firm strategy, the structure of the company and the type of peo0le you hire and the behavior of the employees?

In all cases justify your answers. Each question is worth equal points.
