Question #1: Fred Wong started Fine Glass Design company in Vancouver over 30 years ago. His company has a reputation for good quality and he has many return customers. He has never before used information technology in his company and he knows very little about it. However, new competition has moved into Vancouver and Sally, the sales manager, has suggested they start using information technology to better help them compete. Sally suggests to Fred that they have tons of customer data that they should start putting to good use. Fred is unconvinced so he decides to hire you as a consultant. You are a knowledge worker and you have studied Busi 237. The first thing you tell Fred is how important data can be to his company. Fred doesn't want to spend a lot of money so you recommend what purchases he should make to get the best hardware for the least amount of money. You also briefly discuss with Fred about the categories of software that he will need to get started and what you recommend for the least investment. Fred agrees to do what you suggest. A few months later Fred calls on you again. He is very happy with his new information technology but he says the sales people are complaining because they are unable to get up-to-date information on specific product transactions for the previous quarter: You explain the issues to Fred and you suggest which information technology he needs to do to deal with this. Finally, Fred tells you that the newly formed marketing department is quite upset that the production department is not keeping them up-to-date on the latest product developments. The marketing department says that they need this information to plan their marketing strategies for the next year. Using the terms and concepts from your textbook, discuss the issues in this question and explain what you will say to Fred.
