In a short essay, explain why orientation and training are important for organizations. Give examples of some of the tasks that HR departments use in orientation and training.
Answer: The process of introducing a person to his new job is known as orientation. How well orientation is done, will carry on to how well a new employee adjusts to his/her position and role in the organization.
There are two types of orientation: work unit orientation and organization orientation.
Work unit orientation familiarizes the employee with the goals of the work unit, clarifies how his or her job contributes to the unit's goals, and includes an introduction to his or her new coworkers. Organization orientation informs the new employee about the company's goals, history, philosophy, procedures, and rules.
As time goes by, employees may need to increase their skills. This is handled through training. As job demands change, employee skills need to be altered and updated. Managers are responsible for deciding what type of training employees need and what form it should take. There are two general categories of training. General training includes skills that everyone in the organization needs such a communication skill, computer systems, customer service and supervisory skills. Specific training targets specific issues that arise in the organization such as creativity, diversity, remedial writing, managing change and public speaking/presentation skills.
Although much of employee training can be done in traditional ways such as classroom lecture, organizations are increasingly relying on technology-based training. Nowadays organizations are increasingly relying on e-learning applications to deliver important information and to develop employees' skills.
