Question 2 (10 points) N 1.1 An aluminum sample is subjected to an elastic compressive stress, o, in a channel die such that it cannot deform in the y-direction, but deformation is permitted in the x-direction, as shown Y in the figure. Assume that the material material is isotropic and exhibits linear-elastic Rigid die behavior. (a) Express 0, 0,15, and in terms of Oz,v and E. [Note some of these stresses and strains might be zero]. (b) Assume now, that this particular aluminum sample exhibits the following properties: yield stress yield = 150 MPa, Young's modulus E=70GPa, Poisson ratio 1=0.3. Using either the Tresca criterion and the von Mises criterion, determine if an applied stress 0 = 160 MPa, would cause the sample to yield. [Hint: For simplicity, you can ignore friction between the die and the material]
