- Question 2 Material Balance (3 marks) An epoxyethane production plant is supplied with a Fresh Feed which consists of ethene and air which is combined with a recycle stream (RC) to form a Mixed Feed (MF). The Reactor Product (RP) is subsequently split into two streams by an ideal separator i.e. a Product stream (P) containing all epoxyethane from the reactor and the Separator Product (SP) stream containing other components. All of the water produced as a by-product of combustion of ethene in the reactor may be assumed to exit the process via stream P and the quantity of this water should be clearly reported in the Material Balance Tables. The plant operates with a fresh feed molar ratio = 8 (i.e. 8 mols of air to 1 mol of ethene), a reactor Conversion per pass, Cpp = 67% and a recycle fraction, r = 0.65. 85% of the ethene converted per pass forms the primary product. The process layout is identical to the arrangement shown in Figure Q1. Take 100 kmols/day of ethene in the Fresh Feed as a basis and construct a complete material balance table for the process using Microsoft Excel. You must identify all components and quantities present in all process streams and it must be possible to readily identify the flowrate of each component in all pipe sections (units of kmols/day) Note that the relevant reaction equations are: C2H4 + 0.5 O2 C2H40 [equation 1] C2H4 + 302 2CO2 + 2H2O [equation 2]
