Question 3 Consider a distillation column operating at 515000Pa that is being fed by a tank which is open to the atmosphere containing an inorganic substance diluted in water. The solution contained in the tank has a viscosity of 0.5cP, and a density of 1000kg/m3. As shown in Figure 2, the tank and the distillation column are separated by the wall, and a piping system was set up such that it draws water from the tank, over the wall, before directing it to the distillation column with the aid of a pump. Figure 2 further shows all the flow disruptions, major and minor losses that are required to get the solution over the wall and fed to the distillation column. These disruptions are listed in Table 1. The pipe connecting the storage tank to the column is made of commercial steel, has a length of 43m, and an inside diameter of 27mm. If the feed to the distillation column is 2m below the outlet to the storage tank determine the head required from the pump for a volumetric flowrate in water of 8.35m3/hr. The value of for a commercial steel pipe is 0.046mm Table 1: Major losses in the system 3 Figure 2: Schematic illustration of a distillation column fed by the storage tank
