QUESTION 5
Water is used as solvent to extract sugar from a 50 tones/h of wet sliced sugar cane by using extraction unit. The sugar cane has the following compositions:
\table[[Component,Weight Fraction],[Water,0.48 Water/ton],[Pulp,0.40 ton Pulp/ton],[Sugar,0.12 ton Sugar/ton]]
The extract layer (Water + Sugar) leaving the extractor containing 5%(by weight) sugar. 45% of the sugar in the sliced cane is recovered in the extract layer. The residual cane contains 3 tones of liquor (Water + Sugar) per ton of pulp in the raffinate layer. The raffinate layer contains Water, Sugar, and Pulp.
